This month, we are pleased to feature Frank H. McCormick, Ph.D., Acting Station Director for the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. 

The National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (Cohesive Strategy) is the strategic framework for addressing wildland fire challenges across the nation. The Wildland Fire Leadership Council recently completed a year-long review of the Cohesive Strategy and found that it is still relevant and valid as a strategy for changing the outcomes of wildland fire in the United States.

The Western Urban & Community Forestry Committee gathered for its annual meeting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, April 11-13. 

The White Cloud Fuels Reduction Project, funded under the White River National Forest Fuels Projects Good Neighbor Agreement, created a Community Protection Zone on federal lands adjacent to communities in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) that have been identified as having an elevated risk of wildfire in Summit County, CO.

The Pacific Islands Forestry Committee gathered in-person for its annual Executive Committee meeting for the first time in three years. The meeting occurred in Tumon, Guam, October 26-29, 2022.

In July 2022, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) entered into a Good Neighbor Authority agreement with the Coconino National Forest to treat 31,000 acres of federal land and safeguard the municipal water source for communities in Central Arizona.

Bayard, NE, proudly wears its Tree City USA status because it didn’t come easily. In June 2017, two tornados touched down in and around the small city of 1,000 people, causing widespread property damage. The storms also did a number on the area’s trees.
