Meet a Forester, Chad VanOrmer
This month, we are pleased to feature Chad VanOrmer, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service Alaska Region.
What was your first position in the field of forestry?
My first position in the field of forestry was with the Tennessee Valley Authority Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee. I entered their apprenticeship program immediately after finishing my degree in Forestry with a Recreation emphasis at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. I started my career in 2001 with the Forest Service on the Craig Ranger District, Tongass National Forest as a Recreation Planner after completing my M.S. degree at the University of Idaho.
How long have you been in your role?
I recently accepted the Regional Forester for the Alaska Region in April 2024. Prior to that, I served as the Deputy Regional Forester in Alaska for four years. Most of my career has been in Alaska, except for seven years on the Green Mountain & Finger Lakes National Forest in Vermont.
What do you enjoy most about being a Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) member?
Well, I am a new member of the WFLC and I am looking forward to connecting and building relationships with the group.
What do you see to be the emerging issues in your region?
The integration of our forest management and watershed restoration strategies to produce multiple economic, social, and natural resource benefits.

Sailing

Hiking with my family
