Meet a Forester, Troy Heithecker

This month, we are pleased to feature Troy Heithecker, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Region.

What was your first position in the field of forestry?
Bio-Tech for the forestry sciences lab in Juneau, AK.

How long have you been in your role? 
7 months.

What do you enjoy most about being a Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) member?
The opportunity to meet and learn from so many great conservation leaders.

What do you see to be the emerging issues in your region?
Not surprising…the threat of the whole place burning down!

What is your favorite hobby?
Hard to pick one…I have been a competitive cyclist for over 20 years so that, hunting and playing music.

What is your favorite tree?
Callitropsis nootkatensis, although we called it Chamaecyparis nootkatensis in the 90s.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Cycling and Hunting.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
Honestly, probably tech. I got my bachelor’s degree in computer science with a focus on application design and artificial intelligence.
